Welcome to Mr. Mehaffy's Year 5 class
UNCRC Article 28: Every child has the right to a primary education.
Our new topic this term is 'Space'. The class will be finding out lots of fascinating facts and doing lots of cool work. Keep checking back to see what the class have been up to!
Trip to Armagh Planetarium
The Year 5 class, along with the Year 2 class, visited Armagh Planetarium as part of their Space topics. Have a look ta the pictures below to see the fun that they had - and you might even see a few rocket launch videos!
Shared Education science day
The Year 5 classes from both schools got together to do lots of experiments and to find out more about each other. They played name bingo and circle swap during P.D.& M.U. in the morning, and performed chromatography and mummification experiments in the next two sections of the day. Iron Man day
The Year 5 class had great fun making huge Iron Men out of recyclable materials at the end of our Eco Warriors topic. The class certainly looked like a scrap yeard at the start of the day! Look at the pictures below to see how they tranformed the materials into their Iron Men!
Shared Education day at Oxford Island
Year 5 classes from both Ballinderry and Ballymacrickett Primary Schools visited Oxford Island, linking in with both classes topics of 'Eco Warriors'. They looked at the history and layout of Lough Neagh, observed some stuffed animals, took part in some bird watching and completed a mini-beast hunt. Some pupils even had the chance to try to feed some birds by hand! Look at the pictures below to see all about their day.

Leek and potato soup
The Year 5 class made soup with vegetables that were grown in the school garden. They dug the potatoes out, prepared and cut the vegetables and, after Mr. Mehaffy cooked it safely in class, tasted the soup. Here are some pictures of everything that happened.

Iron Man 'Green Screen' video
Here, as promised, is the first ever Year 5 video made using 'Green Screen' technology, where the class discuss their favourite part of Chapter 1 of 'The Iron Man'.
Class charter 2016/17
World Book Day 2017
As part of World Book Day 2017, the Year 5 class dressed up as their favourite book character, or as a writer, and had the opportunity to read some books to the Year 1 classes. Have a look at the photos below:
As part of this year's Cinemagic Festival, the Year 5 class were invited to a special BAFTA Kids workshop at the Odyssey Cinema. it was hosted by Ben Shires (host of Totally Amazing) and Lindsey Russell (host of Blue Peter). They had a great time seeing how some of their favourite shows were put together, creating their own superhero, trying some impressions/vocal work (see the video below) and also having the opportunity to meet the director of Wolf Blood. It was a great day that the whole class really enjoyed!
